Description

A grown-up take on classic sloppy joes featuring caramelized onions, savory beef, and melted Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 4 hamburger buns, lightly toasted
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  2. Add the sliced onions in an even layer.
  3. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes until deep golden and sweet.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Push onions to the side and add the ground beef.
  6. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until fully browned.
  7. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  8. Return onions to the beef if separated.
  9. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Let mixture simmer for 4–5 minutes to meld flavors.
  11. Toast the hamburger buns lightly until golden.
  12. Spoon the beef-onion mix onto the bottom half of each bun.
  13. Top with shredded Swiss cheese and place the top bun on.
  14. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

For a lower-sodium option, use reduced-sodium soy sauce. To add a twist, try using different cheeses like Gruyère or provolone.
