Description
A quick and customizable recipe for crispy and delicious air fryer calzones, perfect for a weeknight dinner or game night.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package of pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup cooked meats (pepperoni, sausage, or chicken), diced
- 1 cup fresh spinach or arugula, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Marinara sauce (for dipping)
Instructions
- Prep the Dough: If you’re using store-bought pizza dough, let it come to room temperature per the package instructions. For homemade dough, roll it out on a floured surface until it’s thin.
- Mix Fillings: In a large mixing bowl, blend the ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, diced cooked meats, chopped spinach, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until everything is well combined.
- Roll Out the Dough: Roll out the pizza dough into a large circle, aiming for about ¼ inch in thickness.
- Cut the Dough: Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut out large circles—each should measure about 6-8 inches in diameter.
- Fill the Calzones: Place a generous scoop of the cheese and meat mixture onto one half of each dough circle. Be sure to leave enough space at the edges for sealing.
- Fold and Seal: Carefully fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges tightly to seal them. If desired, crimp the edges with a fork to ensure they don’t open during cooking.
- Prepare for Air Frying: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the calzones with the beaten egg; this gives them a beautiful golden color.
- Air Fry the Calzones: Place the calzones in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches. Air fry for about 10-15 minutes or until they’re golden brown and the dough is fully cooked.
- Check for Doneness: Make sure the filling is bubbling, and the dough is thoroughly cooked. If they’re not ready, you can add an extra couple of minutes.
- Serve: Let the calzones cool for a minute before serving. They taste best when enjoyed fresh out of the air fryer!
Notes
For dipping, marinara sauce is a classic choice, but garlic aioli or ranch dressing also work well.
